CLOSING THE LOOP

How it works
Heat can be extracted from raw or cleaned sewage. The possible heat output is greatest after the water passed the sewage plant: Up to 20 MW.

Benefits
Wastewater heat recovery is a local, renewable, long-term source of energy. It reduces CO2 emissions by 60-80% compared to conventional oil heating. It also helps reduce warming of surface waters by recycling cooler water from wastewater treatment plants.

Potential
Only 100 out of 700 Swiss wastewater treatment plants already recover their wastewater heat. The WWTP in Yverdon-les-Bains is one of them. Its system runs since 2019 and is equipped with Wey valves.
