Basic knowledge: knife gate valves
Knife gate valves are used to control the flow of media containing solids in pipelines. The valve is installed in a pipeline. When actuated, a gate reduces the flow or closes the passage. High pressures often act against the gate and the body, depending on the application for which the valve is used.
Possible areas of application are, for example, in wastewater treatment, the chemical industry, the pulp and paper industry or in biogas plants. Unlike butterfly valves or ball valves, knife gate valves are ideal for contaminated, solids-laden, viscous or sticky media.
FAQ
Do Wey knife gate valves have a preferred flow direction?
Most Wey knife gate valves are bidirectionally tight, meaning they seal in both flow and pressure directions. However, there is a flow direction where the gate is optimally supported by the body of the valve. For details, refer to the respective instruction manual of the product.
For which applications are Wey knife gate valves suitable?
Our knife gate valves are used in a wide variety of industries and for a wide variety of applications: Be it in the treatment of wastewater, the extraction of biogas from liquid manure, in mining or in chemical plants.
For which media can Wey knife gate valves be used?
Wey knife gate valves can be used for almost all types of media, whether liquid, gaseous or solid. Even viscous or sticky substances, fine powders, acidic liquids or media containing large solids are no problem with the right knife gate valve.
For which temperatures can Wey knife gate valves be used?
Wey knife gate valves can be used for medium temperatures from 0 °C up to 400 °C, depending on the type of valve.
Are ATEX-compliant Wey knife gate valves available?
Yes, most of our knife gate valves are also available in ATEX-compliant versions.
Can Wey knife gate valves be used as end-of-line valves?
Yes, there are Wey knife gate valves that can be used as end-of-line valve without a mating or loose flange. For more information, please contact our sales team or read the instruction manual.
In which nominal sizes are Wey knife gate valves available?
Wey knife gate valves cover all common nominal sizes from DN 50 mm, 100 mm and 150 mm up to DN 2000 mm.
What materials are Wey knife gate valves made of?
We use more than 100 materials for our knife gate valves, including, for example, cast iron, ductile iron and stainless steel. For demanding applications, we use particularly corrosion-resistant materials, such as super duplex steel or titanium. In addition, there are a variety of possible coatings, such as PTFE or tungsten carbide, which provide additional protection for the material if required.
For which flange connections are Wey knife gate valves available?
Wey knife gate valves are available in all common DIN and ANSI flange drillings. They are also available in BS and AS, as well as with special flange.
What are the face-to-face dimensions of Wey knife gate valves?
Wey knife gate valves have the common EN and MSS face-to-face dimensions.
What types of actuators are available for Wey knife gate valves?
Depending on the valve, we offer single-acting and double-acting pneumatic cylinders, electric actuators, hydraulic cylinders, as well as handwheel-driven, bevel gear-driven, lever-driven and electrohydraulic actuators.
Are Wey knife gate valves also available as custom-made products?
Yes, our knife gate valves are always customized to the individual application. For particularly demanding applications we also design completely new special knife gate valves.
Where are Wey knife gate valves manufactured?
We have two production plants: Our headquarters in Switzerland and a subsidiary in the US. Our knife gate valves for the DIN markets are manufactured in Switzerland, while our ANSI knife gate valves are partly manufactured in Switzerland and partly in the US.
How are Wey knife gate valves tested?
Every single knife gate valve that leaves our plant is first tested for tightness in accordance with DIN EN 12266-1/2. In addition, the functionality of each actuator is tested with pressure tests to open and close the valve.
